A new electromagnetic weapon, called Leonidas, was showcased in tests in the United States as a solution against drone attacks.
Developed by the company Epirus, the technology demonstrated its effectiveness by destroying 49 drones in seconds without the need to fire projectiles. The system works by emitting electromagnetic interference capable of blocking enemy equipment, bringing them down immediately.
This advancement comes at a time when drones are increasingly prominent in conflicts, such as the wars between Russia and Ukraine, and Israel’s clashes with Hamas. These devices are used not only for reconnaissance but also to neutralize high-value targets like tanks, ships, and aircraft, prompting several countries to invest both in their use and in defense against them.
According to Epirus CEO Andy Lowery, the technology could be applied in civilian environments, such as stadiums, ports, and airports, to prevent attacks. The company, founded in 2018, has already collaborated with US military forces in operations in the Middle East and the Philippines, and is now pursuing new investments to expand its role in so-called cyber warfare, strengthening the US position in this strategic sector.
